In 2007 I took my first workshop in ALEPH's Sage-ing Mentorship Program. In it I was introduced to the concept of the ethical will, and I began the process of creating my own such document in time for my 60th birthday. As the process unfolded I found myself writing poetic musings about a wide range of seemingly random subjects — from Revelation to Subways, to Legacy, to Pelicans, to Insomnia, and more than a dozen more. To my own surprise, each time I wrote one of these pieces I felt moved to let its content suggest one or more blessings that I thought I was offering to the family and friends who would one day read them. Ultimately, I recognized that the blessings I thought to offer were really the blessings I yearned to receive.
I shared my ethical will in draft form with my family on my 60th birthday. Later I built a primitive website to house the work. Later, still, I turned it all into a hardbound book, Blessings — A Spiritual Gift for My Family and Friends. Now, with this new website I hope to share these thoughts and blessings with a wider circle.
In 2016 I was taking a class that asked us to write an ethical will. Having done this some years earlier, I took an approach of using the earlier work as a springboard for a new more concise document — my Ethical Will Revisited.
