Tekiah Gadolah

Tekiah gadolah...

His nostrils feel the rush of air
deeply expanding every cell of his lungs

The hard smooth warm mouth of the ram's horn
      presses against his lips

His eyes are open, but he sees something far
removed from the walls of this house of prayer

      The light surrounds him
the wind, the spirit moves through him

He embraces the souls of all the present
He places his hands, his energy, his grace into the midst of the departed

      The sound issues forth
a clear piercing song, ancient and new

He stands in prayer, a long longer louder, hopeful prayer
transmuting the energy of a civilization into a blast of sound

      The moment stops in time
      He too is a listener

The waning volume of air flows forth through the instrument
He feels its departure as he punches a final twisting cry from the shofar

      Depleted, moved, elated, enriched
      Head bowed in grateful reverence

Y'asher koach!
